Macro Security

Q: When I open the file in Excel, nothing happens. I just see some text in a cell telling me about macro security. What do I do?

A: Your Excel macro security is set to disable macros without notification. In other words, no macros will be allowed to run and you will not be notified when a macro is blocked from running. For the program to run, you must set your Excel macro security level to allow macros, either with or without notification. Allowing macros to run without notification is not recommended because some malicious software is distributed as macro code.

Another possibility, if you are using Excel 2007, is that you have your macro security set to allow macros with notification. In Excel 2007, the "notification" isn't particularly obvious. It shows up as a "Security Warning" above the spreadsheet cells, but below the ribbon. Click on the "Options..." button to enable macros.

If you're not sure how to (or whether you should) modify your macro security options, search for "macro security" in Excel help.

Q: When I open the file in Excel 2003 or earlier, I get a message asking whether or not I want to enable or disable macros. What do I do?

A: Your Excel macro security level is set to allow macros with notification. You have the option to either allow or disallow macros to run on a file-by-file basis. To run the program, you will need to click to enable macros. Again, if you're not sure how to (or whether you should) modify your macro security options, search for "macro security" in Excel help.

Q: With all this talk about security and malicious software, should I be worried about running SimpleTourneyManager? Is it going to cause problems on my machine? What about privacy?

A: SimpleTourneyManager is not intended to perform anything malicious on your computer, nor to infringe on your privacy. Feel free to search the internet to see if anyone has posted any complaints (if you find any, please let me know!) You should know, though, that much like any other software, it will add a registry key upon installation.

In Excel 2007, there is an alternative to clicking Options each time you start the program when the macro Security Warning notification pops up:

In Excel Options, choose Trust Center and click on Trust Center Settings button.
Select Trusted Locations and click on Add New Location button.
Browse to the folder where SimpleTourneyManager is installed.  Check off the "Subfolders of this location are also trusted" checkbox and click OK.

Excellent suggestion. Thanks.
