Tournament not saved
« Topic Start: March 15, 2009, 11:55:21 AM »

I know I am just full of questions but I ran my first big tournament with your program last night so I have some feedback.

For reasons I will only attribute to it being an HP product, my laptop mysteriously shut down during one the breaks.  I cam back to the room to find the screen dark and when I moved the mouse it did not come back on.  Upon starting the computer up again my tournament was gone.  My question is, should I have saved the tournament (on the setup tab) after I entered all the buy-in's and before starting the tournament?  Would this have given me my tournament back after the shutdown?  I had hoped I could just come back in and advance through the levels to get back but I had lost everything.  I ended up using the program just as a timer and manually had to calculate my payouts and track the knockouts etc.

Could an auto save feature be built in once the tournament starts in case of problems like this?

Thanks.

Thanks for the questions. I love the feedback.

There is nothing you could have done that I am aware of. I'll run some tests, though, and let you know for sure.

I will look into an autosave feature. If I can make it work, it probably would be very beneficial.

Good to know there was nothing I could have done.  I am really not a fan of laptops and will probably just start lugging my desktop and a monitor to my poker room.  Maybe I will just run it through my TV in there.

If you use the laptop (or same with desktop), make sure to change these Windows settings before starting your tournament:

1.  Turn off any screen saver.
2.  Change your power settings so nothing is shut off automatically after inactivity (monitor, hard disk, etc.).

Windows won't necessarily recognize the running tournament clock as activity, so it will think the computer is idle and activate screen saver or power settings.  This may be the cause of the hang.

This brings to mind a suggestion for a feature to add to STM.  As noted above, the running program does not indicate user activity (keyboard use, mouse movement or such) to Windows, so Windows interprets this as an idle computer and runs screen saver, power settings, etc.  Is there any command you can add to STM to run periodically (say, every 5 minutes) that Windows will interpret as user activity and reset the idle detect?  This would be a great little feature - one that no tournament clock/manager has, as far as I know.

I'm not sure, but I'll look into it. I agree that it would be a great feature. I'll need to look into what Windows deems "activity" to be. Thanks.
